Favorite Movies Blog Hop

(hosted by Alex Cavanaugh)

I am not really into movies because I find it very challenging to find something that interests me. I am very picky when it comes to story lines, plots, etc. I hate special effects, rapid movement etc because I have to cover my eyes as to not go into a bout of vertigo, seizure type stuff, whatever. And, weirdly enough, going into a movie theater always gave me motion sickness, even before having health problems. However, I can't resist a blog hop or any kind of top ten, top five, top 20 lists etc. I might not even have ten top movies, but I'll give it a try (in no particular order)

Kelly's Heroes
It's a Wonderful Life
Almost Famous
The Magical Legend of the Leprechaun
Gone With the Wind
Rock Star
Star Trek The Voyage Home
Miracle on 34th Street (the original)
Milo and Otis
Homeward Bound

How about that, that's ten. What do you like?

What's Your Chocolate?

I love blog fests and I love chocolate even more. So when the two came together and the blog fest was announced a while ago, I had to jump on it. The hardest part was to narrow it down ... Now when I say I love chocolate, I mean the "real" kind, not the stuff that is unbearably sweet with corn syrup or tons of added sugar and other crap. I want to taste the cocoa!

However, I also love white chocolate and I know it's not really chocolate at all. My favorite would be a combination of the two, white and milk or dark. The creamier, the better, and please - hold the nuts!

One of my favorite desserts is called church windows, I even won a baking contest with it once. It's mostly a seasonal recipe and it does have nuts in it, pecans really, but it is easy to make and very visually appealing.  You can find the recipe online under the name cathedral windows.

Dog Days of Summer: What is Your Ideal Vacation?

It's funny, I keep running into blog fests through new international followers. I think I am getting addicted. Anyway, this one is aptly named The Dog Days of Summer and it's hosted by Jeremy Bates.
I think this year, even those of us in normally cooler climates, have a lot to say about summer. Alas, I've complained enough about the heat, humidity and storms so I decided to choose to write about the ideal vacation. It makes sense, as my last real vacation was when I was 10 or so and it did not end on a pleasant note.

Really, I have never been on a real vacation since then. For one, in the USA as an employed person it was hard for me to get time off, even with "designated" personal days and despite having an income to spend on a vacation. For one, you had to earn days first and secondly, you had to get approval and that was the tricky part. I did manage to sneak away with my family for long extended weekend events and twice to New York City.
Alas, they weren't ideal because they were stressful. Then, I got laid off and had time, but  no money. Then I got sick and any travel at all is out of the question pretty much.

I used to think my ideal vacation would be in the tropics. Now, where I live the tropics somehow managed to get there and I've had enough of summer. Now, my ideal vacation would be to get away with my boyfriend to a unique bed and breakfast place that was surrounded by gardens and parks. I'd also like a beach nearby, but more like a pleasant lake shore, not the over-crowded Florida type.

Yes, that's it. Since I live in a humid concrete jungle now without any place to spend outside really I crave nature ... get me to any greenery, please!

What Was Your Childhood Monster?

It's funny how things work: I was at a loss for a blog topic and stumbled across a blog hop hosted by Christine Rains. The topic is, as you guessed, about childhood monsters.

Now, growing up in Germany with the original Grimm Brothers tales, not the child-friendly American versions, I did not really have any monsters under the bed or in the closet. Then again, we have wardrobes, not closets, and they do not lead to Narnia either.

Besides, the Grimm Brothers wrote their grim tales to show children that life is not all puppies and kittens. However, I have an experience I've been meaning to share that I am going to sneak in under this topic, as it is a real event that frightened me for years and could take the place of the monster under the bed.

It was a weird day, charged with a strange kind of energy. You know, the kind they describe in books and show in movies when you feel something sinister is about to happen. I am not sure how old I was, perhaps 10, perhaps a little older or younger.

I was in my second floor bedroom and was leaning out the open window. I don't think it was raining. All of a sudden I saw this glowing sphere slowly rising up behind the roof of the neighbors building. Scared, yet fascinated, I was unable to look away, even as the object starting hovering towards me. By the time it was in front of the window, I was screaming and my mother ran up the stairs to see what was going on.

Well, it came into the room, if I remember right, unless my mind has made that up in the 30 plus years since then. My mother saw it too, I asked her what it was, but she just shook her head. The sphere eventually left, the same way it had come in, through the window. To this day I remember the burning smell it left behind, another reminder that what we had seen was very real.

The following day, we asked around in the neighborhood and watched the news and read the paper to see if there were any strange occurrences. Remember, this was way before Internet, social media and all that. All we came up with was a family who said they had seen something that looked like a burning plane in the sky, but none was reported to have crashed of course.

From then on, I have had the occasional nightmare about strange things in the sky attacking us. Research revealed this might have been a "Kugelblitz" or ball lightning. Why it seemed to be attracted by me or my body heat or whatever is still a mystery to me. However, at least if it has a name it's less frightening .... don't you think?

A Heep of Love

Yes, I seem to be addicted to challenges and am participating in another blog fest. This one involves only one post, but it's an interesting topic: First Loves

Movie: Dark Crystal. I am not sure how old I was, but not much older than 10, I guess. It was the first time I had ever been in a movie theater, and it was the first (and last) time my brother, along with his girl friend, took me. I guess this was supposed to be a date for him, but for some reason they took me along. Of course I did not know the meaning of the phrase "third wheel" then.... Despite doing by best (unintentionally) to embarrass us all, they did get married and still are.

Music: Uriah Heep. I could write a book on them ... but, to digress, my first taste was in 1977 or so. I was with a girlfriend two houses up the street watching TV, and while she drooled over Smokie at age 11, I was fascinated by the dude with the red wild hair and blue eye shadow who fronted Uriah Heep at the time. A sign of things to come ... They are still my favorite band. It's in the lyrics, the melodies and the feeling they evoke with their music. I also collect Uriah Heep memorabilia and have a few rare items, although my collecting has been on hold for a while.

Book: Since I've probably read thousands in my 44 years, it's hard to say which was the first I really loved. Probably Clan of the Cave Bear, but my favorite overall is the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan.

Person: That is tricky and hard to keep brief because when I thought I loved, I found out later that it probably wasn't.

The first person, not just of opposite gender but in general, to ever declare his love for me was a boy in 5th grade I had a crush on. Wait, you say, what about family/parents etc. weren't they first? Nope. This thing with this boy did not end well, although we were in the same class together until we graduated.

However, I really don't live in the past and I am in love now with someone, so that is what counts. And, to use a cliche, "it feels like the first time." That of course is my boyfriend Tom, who has contributed to my blog and inspires a lot of what I write.

Reflecting on the A - Z challenge

If you missed my daily April posts, they were about music. Not just any music posts however, I tried to write about stuff that not many people know about.

This was my first A to Z challenge and I must admit, I was a little bit intimidated. Not because I don't think that my writing does not stack up, but because a lot of the bloggers who participated are what I call "big time," with hundreds of followers, dozens of comments on each post, and blogs that look like professional websites.

However, I was pleased to note that two of the co-hosts stopped by and even the top bird, Arlee, made time to leave a comment. I highly appreciate everyone who took the time to read, comment, or even follow me. I tried to return the favor to all. I only was unable to return two or three comments/follows because the site would not load up with my connection or I could not find it. I also thought it's interesting that most bloggers are female, even though the host and one of my regular co-host readers are male.

As you can see, I am a statistics nerd, so decided to also do a quick summary of what posts were popular. I promoted each post equally with two tweets on the day of posting (with different hash tags hours apart) and once via Facebook.

Most Page Views:

D is for Deep Purple
V is for Venrez
Y is for Yoko Ono
B is for Beatles
T is for Triumph

Most Promoted by Readers

X is for X by Ten
T is for Triumph
U is for Uriah Heep
C is for Captain Beyond

Most Feedback:

B is for Beatles
Y is for Yoko Ono

Last, but not least, a special thank you to my boyfriend Tom who contributed the S and Y entries and for being such a loyal reader of all my stuff, even before he really knew me.
