In my opinion, everyone and everything in this life is bi-polar to a certain extent. The key to emotional well being, as well as order in the world, is how well in control we are of the opposing forces and maintain them to achieve balance.
The concept of negative and positive energy is not hocus pocus or mumbo jumbo, it is scientifically proven. While in general people have no problem believing this about objects, they have a harder time believing this about "invisible" things, such as thoughts, sounds, impressions and the like.
Regardless of an acknowledgement of these forces, they exist. Now, one might think that with awareness and acceptance of positive and negative energies people would be drawn to the positive. However, all you have to do is read or watch the News, or even most shows on television, and you will see it's not so.
Why that is remains a mystery. While many of wish that only the positive would exist, it's not so. There can't be light without dark, warmth without cold. Nor can we exit society and remove ourselves from daily living and obeying laws that other humans create, no matter how stupid they may seem. The more people this earth has to support, the more chaos humanity has to keep in check because of so many different views.
That is why balance is so important. How to achieve it on an individual level in our daily lives depends on the person. Some people are more sensitive to negative energy, and others are not bothered by it at all. The former have to work harder to maintain balance.
To balance negative emotions, there are many paths one can take. A lot of people like to immerse themselves in creative endeavors, such as writing, drawing, painting, performing etc. However, even passive roles such as reading or listening to music can nourish the spirit and restore emotional balance.
On the other hand, the material chosen can also affect our emotional balance. For example, music with violent lyrics and books with graphic and disturbing plots would probably not be the best choice when one finds herself in need of relaxation.
The best way to balance energies in our daily lives would be if we could only surround ourselves with people who themselves are in balance. However, we don't have a lot of flexibility when it comes to family members or the work environment.
The key is to recognize people who are not in balance and to engage in balancing activities after we have been exposed to them. This may mean taking a bath after work for some, or reading for others. However, many of us tend to feel guilty to take this time out for ourselves, especially if we have spouses and children. But, you have a responsibility to yourself first so you won't be the one others will have to take refuge from.

I'm with you! In order to maintain balance in a negative world, we need to surround ourselves with as much positive as possible.
I know what you mean. I'm becoming increasingly sensitive to the negative. I find myself cringing at certain books and TV shows--mostly violent police dramas-- which never bothered me before. They really effect me negatively now and I won't subject myself to that anymore. No need to wonder why I immerse myself in my boring stories with all those lame, nicey-nicey characters. It's just for my sanity! LOL
Wonderful post. Sometimes it very difficult to balance things. I rarely get time to myself with a small child. Yet it's nice to get a few minutes to sit and read.
Excellent post. I am surrounded by out-of-balance people and counter it with my own success. I engage them in successful ventures to illustrate their own personal positives. Some days, it is horrifically difficult. Others it is the natural progression of friendship.
And then there are the days I unplug and spend a few hours soaking with a book or playing a video game.
