A to Z Challenge 2020: M is for Mauritius

Mauritius is a country I had never heard of until I received a trade offer for a postcard from there. This island nation is located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar (by about 500 miles or 800 km). Interestingly enough, it ranks 23rd out of 163 countries (96 spots above the USA) on the Global Peace Index scale. Mark Twain said that heaven was modeled after Mauritius.

Mauritius only has two seasons: cool (June to September) and hot (December to April). As it is, temperatures stay fairly uniform throughout the year. It has no official language. Most people speak two, three or more languages.

Mauritius should not be confused with Mauritania. The latter is also in Africa, but it's at least a 12-hour plane ride away, and it has a desert climate. Strangely enough, Mauritania also ranks safer than the USA, but only by 6 spots.

Fun fact: Mauritius is one of only a handful of countries that has no domestic nor international conflict or tension.

While I chose this postcard design because this postcard was a trade and not a surprise, it is one of my favorites. I love the scenery: the tropically blue water, fluffy clouds and hilly peaks on the horizon. Now, the stamp doesn't seem that exciting, but it shows the shape of the island quite nicely.

It's got a lot going for it for a small island. The water around it looks to be teeming with life.
