P is for Praying Mantis

If you found this post because you are expecting insects or religious content, there is nothing to see here, sorry. This is about the melodic hard rock band Praying Mantis that was part of the NWOBHM. While established for decades and critically acclaimed, they are not that widely known.

Unfortunately, this seems to be another one of those instances where the name of the band makes it harder to find it. For example, I had to put a song name into the YouTube search function in order to come up with any music videos.

Other factors that might have hindered their popularity could be several name changes and managerial issues that plagued them in the early days. By 1990, Praying Mantis re-established itself and has released albums on a regular basis since then, although band members keep changing. Their founders however, brothers Chris and Tino Troy, have remained.

If they are so hard to locate, how did I find them? Three Uriah Heep members were part of the revolving lineup of Praying Mantis: Pete Goalby, John Sloman, and Bernie Shaw. Since I collect Heep related stuff ... And I am partial to melodic hard rock. Other notable Praying Mantis members have included Doogie White, Gary Barden, Paul Di'Anno and Dennis Stratton.

My favorite songs are "The Journey Goes On" and "Lost World," so those are the two videos I chose.

My goodness, I haven't heard of any of these bands...well, most of them. And I thought I knew music!

Thanks, that was my purpose: to write about stuff most people don't know.
