I prefer the personal approach, geared to someone I know who needs help. (Which reminds me, I have some ginger to send you!) No, you can never tell for certain where your money goes when you toss it into a "kettle" that big. But volunteering, that's the thing that has instant affect and rewards. Special Olympics for instance. You help out a "special" little kid or even an adult and you see straight away the good you do.Glorygarden@msn.comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05590509665833028919noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6935686218112077955.post-74985794864462751162011-11-28T17:04:51.537-05:002011-11-28T17:04:51.537-05:00Alex, it's more than sad to see that these &qu...Alex, it's more than sad to see that these "organizations" often refuse to not help people in need. Rather, it appears they often help themselves instead. I am beginning to think there is a lot of hypocrisy and deceit--even fraud involved in some of the most respected "non-profit" organizations. The worst part of this problem is that we, as donors, now must question the very act of kindness and giving. One positive solution might be to donate directly to a PERSON that you know needs assistance. Regardless, more and more, it seems this is a discussion that does need to take place in our society.Raymond Alexander Kukkeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01347971987435644221noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6935686218112077955.post-4911881146987747092011-11-28T15:06:44.488-05:002011-11-28T15:06:44.488-05:00Well, even the local people here in Louisa were tu...Well, even the local people here in Louisa were turned down by FEMA for earthquake relief. They had to take their plight to the Governor who set it all in motion so they were finally approved.

thanks for the insightful comment!Alexandra Heephttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00835198200027459295noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6935686218112077955.post-19385955571280461992011-11-28T14:38:54.501-05:002011-11-28T14:38:54.501-05:00An interesting and balanced firsthand perspective,...An interesting and balanced firsthand perspective, Alex.

Part of the problem is that when charities become too big the purpose for which they were formed gets lost. This means that people, like you, get lost too, because your voice isn't loud enough to reach the top of their big head.

I continue to wonder why so many large companies push and even "expect" participation in the United Way on their workers.

It does appear that unless you are in an earthquake, forget about it!

The fact that you can't get help is deeply disturbing.Dianehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09818249321432380704noreply@blogger.com
